Clay (Dos, paper clay) 2 Popsicle sticks Rolling pin (empty paper towel roll) Wax paper Shape cutters (knife, cookie cutters) Black acrylic paint (black stamp, undiluted water paint) Metallic rub-ons (silver or gold works best) Stamps
Instructions:
Step 1: Place wax paper on smooth surface, lay your Popsicle sticks adjacent each other approximately 1 to 2 inches apart. Put clay in the center of the sticks.
Step 2: Roll clay out flat with rolling pin between the Popsicle sticks.
Hint: The Popsicle sticks ensure the clay will roll evenly and will be the thickness of the Popsicle sticks, which is thick enough for dimension and not to bulky or heavy.
Step 3: Cut out the desired shapes. If the clay cuts out with rough edges you can dip your fingers in water and gently rub the surface and sides to smooth it out.
Step 4: Take out your stamps, make sure your stamp is not too big or small for the shape you have cut, if so make adjustments till your satisfied. Gently push the stamp in the clay then remove.
NOTE: Clean your stamps thoroughly when finished, the clay is harder to remove once it dries on your stamp.
Step 5: Allow your stamped pieces to air dry; it usually takes about 24 hours. If you can't wait that long (like me) place them on a cookie sheet and bake at 200*F for about 1 to 1 ½ hours. Allow to cool.
Step 6: Paint the top and sides of the clay pieces with black acrylic paint. Allow to dry, approximately 10 minutes.
Step 7: Bring out your metallic rub-ons and a Q-tip and rub the metallic on the clay. (If you don't mind getting messy, your fingers work best at applying the rub-ons). Everything recessed will stay black and the rest will pick up the metallic colours. To seal the metallic finish you can either apply a coat of acrylic varnish or use a spray varnish or clear emboss the clay.
Step 8: Because the back of the clay is left bare you can now add your adhesive onto it easily. Glue works great.
Step 9: Have fun and experiment, and let me know what you've tried.
