*The following instructions are for Microsoft Word 2003 Pro. Other versions or software may vary, but you should be able to complete this task in a similar manner in most word processing programs.

1. Create text box (Insert > Text Box).

2. Using the mouse, draw a text box. Do not worry about specific size at this point.

3. Measure the space on your layout where you want your journaling box to go.

4. Using the rulers along the edges of the screen, adjust the text box to the needed size. This can be done by clicking and dragging the small squares in the corners and on the sides of the text box. (If rulers are not showing in your program, choose View > Ruler.)

5.  Double click the edge of the text box and a “Format Text Box”

     dialog box should appear.

6. Click on the tab labeled “Colors and Lines” if it’s not already selected.

   7.  Change the fill color to black (or another suitable, dark color).

   8.  Click OK. The box should appear solid black (or whatever color   

        you chose).

9. Click inside the text box. Cursor will appear white so that it can be seen.

10. Change font color to white. To do this, click the text color icon at the top toolbar (it is an “A” with the active color underneath it). If this is not in the toolbar, click View > Toolbars > Formatting.

11. Type desired text, which should show up in white and be easy to read against the dark background. Format and arrange text within the box as you normally would.

12. For use on a layout, print on white paper and trim around text box so that no white edges are showing.

NOTES:

-          This technique can be used with any color if a color printer is available. White text can still be achieved on black if a color print is not available.

-          This look is perfect for creating the look of a chalkboard, especially if you use a child-like font.
