Team Sketch Project: 1 Sketch, 6 Great Ideas
By Holly Blackwell with the POTH Design Team

Barbara put her designing talents to great use with this unique sketch. It is a one-page 12”x12” layout created to hold anywhere from one to three photographs. Plenty of room is allowed with two potential areas for journaling, as well as a large title. Cropped photos or decorative elements overlap a large journaling area. The vertical line could represent a change in paper or ribbon/fibers.

Take a look at Barbara’s sketch above, which she has graciously designed for POTH’s design team and members. Scan through the design team’s creations below to get inspiration for your own version of this layout design. Remember to not limit yourself to the layout’s specifics. It can easily be adapted to a different page size, the design can be rotated, and elements can be modified to fit your specific needs.

Digital Designer Cristina stayed true to the sketch in her elegant Renn Fest layout. The layout features three photographs – one larger, and two smaller cropped photos. She utilized both journaling areas to tell her story and chose an appropriate font for a stunning title beneath the focal point picture. She interpreted the vertical line with a ribbon and beautiful gold embellishment. Note some of the nice details on her page, such as the embossed background, torn & inked journaling edges & the pins.
Cristina’s journaling reads: This was our second year attending the Maryland Renaissance Festival. It was so much more fun in costume! We even convinced friends Cathy and Ronan to come with us. Kyle and Jack loved having them "play dress-up" too!

I created this Winter Fun layout, using Barbara’s sketch as the basis. I stuck with the basic design, using one focal point photo on the left and a journaling block on the right with two squares overlapping the area. However, I made a few adjustments to better fit my photographs. I omitted the title and journaling along the bottom left. Instead I used one of the squares as my title and was able to fit all of my journaling on the one box. Ribbon was glued along the vertical line, and a few additional accents were included (more ribbon, mittens).
My journaling reads: Hugh came and spent the night over Christmas break. As always, the boys had some tiffs but ultimately had a great time. We even roasted marshmallows on our new fire pit. It sure was cold though!!! 12-28-04 Age 6

Paper Design Team Member, Charity used the sketch to create a colorful single-photo layout entitled Girls. Her design is the perfect example of using a sketch but “making it your own.” She used the sketch as a guide for placement of some elements such as the focal point photo and her subtitle. However, she changed a few elements by journaling on tags, and placing her main title above the picture. Charity chose to use a black & white photo which stands out brilliantly against the bold colors featured in her layout.

Can you believe this Tree of Life layout is only Peggy’s second digital page??? She used the sketch as a relatively strict guideline to element placement on her 12x12 layout. A square accent and cropped photo mingle amongst her journaling on one half of the layout. A leather strip separates that area from her focal point photograph, title, journaling information and an additional accent. Her color choices and amazing textures are a perfect match for these pictures.

Julie uses this month’s sketch to capture her cat’s odd napping habits in her paper layout titled Ollie the Cat-Tortionist. Julie was able to rotate the focal point photo to a horizontal position to best suit her photographs. However, her creative matting technique allowed her to maintain the vertical design integrity. Journaling weaves around two cropped photos while a small accent and large, creative title fill the bottom portion of the layout.
Julie’s techniques: The main photo and blue mat were both sanded. The tan papers were all inked. After the acrylic paint dried on the title, she used a black Marvy pen to outline the word “Ollie”.

Shelley adapted her A Perfect Day layout to an 8.5”x11” size. She used a variety of stamps to create a relaxed tropical theme. She created her own patterned paper with coordinating stamps and placed it on the left portion of the layout to provide the separation suggested in the sketch. Two cropped photos flow through the journaling block, splitting the area into quadrants. Stamped titles are the perfect finishing touch.
