Pagesoftheheart.net Altered Art For my daughters wedding, we need a container for guests to put their cards in to the happy couple. I decided to alter a couple hat boxes and make her a special cake card holder instead of buying one of the paper ones that is available. It was fairly easy to make and my daughter just loved it. Some of the guests actually thought it was one of her edible wedding cakes. Not only did my daughter use this for her cards but my niece and one of Jessica’s friends will also be using it at their weddings next year. They will just pop off the flowers that are on there and replace them with flowers that coordinates with their own wedding colors.
Supplies needed: *2 round hat boxes. I found this set of 5 boxes at Joann Fabrics. (It was priced at $20 but I used a 40% off coupon so I ended up getting 5 round hat boxes for $12). I used these two sizes for my project: 12.5” diameter x 7” (with the lid) and 8.5” diameter x 5” (no lid).
*exacto knife and metal ruler *1 yard material - I picked out white material with silver specks in it. *pencil *scissors *Tacky glue (or fabric glue) and foam brush or a popsicle stick *package of pearl bead strands *hot glue gun *White satin ribbon *silk flowers (the ones I used was ones our florist had left over from doing Jessica’s flowers and she sold them to us really cheap). 1. We will work with the large box first. Turn the box over so the bottom is facing up. Take smaller box and position it in the center of the bottom of the large box. Trace around it with the pencil Remove small box and with exacto knife, cut on the large box bottom 1” inside the pencil line. This hole will allow cards to fall down into the large box. It will be covered with the smaller box so the cut doesn’t have to be perfect or exact. Just make sure you don’t cut the hole larger than your small box. 2. Now get the smaller box, flip it over and in the bottom of it, mark and cut out a section measuring approximately ¾” x 7”. (this is where the cards will be dropped into the cake). 3. Spread out your material and using the boxes as your template, trace around them with your pencil and cut with scissors. You will need one round piece for the top of each box. Working with one box at a time, apply tacky glue to the flat sections of the boxes and adhere the fabrics to them. Once both are done and dried, with you scissors, carefully slice the material where the holes are. I glued the fabric of the card slot to the inside so the box didn’t show. 4. measure, mark and cut fabric to the height of each box. Spread glue and adhere the fabric to the sides of both boxes. Allow to dry completely. 5. Take the large lid and adhere white satin ribbon around it. This lid is actually the BOTTOM of your cake so it’s used upside down. With flat side down and using hot glue gun, glue bead strands to the outer top rim. You need to make sure the box will fit down inside the lid so don’t glue the beads towards the insides. Place large cake inside the cake bottom. 6. Place the small cake on top of the larger cake and hot glue them together. 7. Hot glue bead strands along the edges of both cakes. 8. cut 8-10 bead strands approx 8” long and hot glue them to the bottom cake allowing each one to drape or hang as shown. 9. cut 8-10 bead strands approx 6” long and hot glue them to the top cake allowing each one to drape or hang. 10. arrange silk flowers on the bottom cake and hot glue into place when satisfied with placement. © Copyright 2006 by Pagesoftheheart.net |
