Changing a Color Photo to Black & White Using Photoshop CS

1. Open your photo. For this example, I used the BLUE HILLS photo that came in the sample Windows files.
2. On the standard toolbar, click on Image>Adjustments>Desaturate. Alternately, you could just use the keyboard shortcut Shift+Crtl+U.
3. This feature automatically changes the photo file settings to grayscale.
4. If you are not pleased with these results, you can adjust the color further and make the dark colors darker. Again, from the toolbar, select Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast.
5. By adjusting the sliders left or right, you can change the hues of the photo. If you have the Preview box clicked on, then you can see the changes as you make them. Click OK when you’ve got the photo colored the way you want.
6. The following screen shot shows the original photo, the photo desaturated by just using step #2, and the photo further edited using steps #4 and #5.
