Black and White photos in Paint Shop Pro 8

It is very easy to change color photos to black and white in Paint Shop Pro 8.  This very easy effect gives a classic look to photos without loss of quality, and improves the chances that your photos will match your layout!

After opening your photo in PSP 8, decide if it needs to be cropped, altered, or enhanced.  This usually looks better if done before the change to black and white.  Take care not to make it too contrasty, as this will decrease the number of greys and your photo will be very black and white, and may glare a bit.

The Original Color Photo

The orange shirt in the photo is completely out of place and this photo will be improved in black and white.

Once your photo is to your liking, you can change it to black and white.  There are two ways to accomplish this.

The first and easiest is to look under the Image tab on the Main toolbar.  There you will find Greyscale, and this is the effect you want.

The other way to change to Greyscale is not as easy but can be used for other effects.  Under the Adjust tab there is a setting called Hue and Saturation.  Under this tab is Colorize.

The Colorize Tab

Here you can choose to tint the photo any color you want to, at whatever saturation you choose.  For black and white, the hue does not matter; set the saturation to 0 and the photo will be Greyscale.

Saturation Set at 0

This is very handy for other effects.  You can use this tool to change the photo to other tints, such as sephia.  For Sephia photos, you can tint the photo a yellow to tan hue, with the saturation set as required (I used a 48 here).

Now that we can make our photos Greyscale and tint, we can enhance them in other ways.  With a black and white photo, it is nice to have some of it remain color. To colorize it, select the area you want on the black and white photo with the Lasso tool or the Magic wand, and Colorize that area as before. To have the area remain the color it was before, a little more manipulation is required.

With the photo still in color, copy it and paste as a new image.  Make this second image Greyscale.

The two images, one color and one black and white

Copy this Greyscale image and paste it onto the Color photo as a new layer.  All that you will see is the Greyscale layer.  Hide this layer.  On the original color layer, select the area you want.  This is particularly handy for things like eyes, Santa hats, denim jeans, and special focal points.  In this example I chose a color, red.  Using the Magic wand, I chose a certain red.

Two layers, showing the color layer

You can see the selected items here shown by the “marching ants” surrounding them.  Note on Layers palette, the Black and white raster is hidden.

Make the Black and white layer visible now, and highlight that layer in the layer palette list.  The selected areas will now be on that layer.

Selected areas on the black and white layer

Simply delete the selected areas on the black and white layer.  This will allow the color from the lower layer to show through

These are just some very simple examples of changing a photo to black and white in PSP8, and enhancing this manipulation a bit for some nice results and effects that will have people asking you how!
