Kids' Valentines Treat Cards

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and with it, a time-honored tradition of trading cards and/or treats with friends and classmates.

This is a quick project you can do with your kids so they have a chance to make something fun and delicious for their valentines this year.

Supplies:

  • 12x12 patterned paper

or  12x12 white paper, 2-3 heart stamps and 2-3 inks

for my example I used Marvy inks and stamps from Biblical Impressions

note:  each sheet of white paper will make 8 valentines

  • flat suckers
  • stapler
  • hole punch (standard size)
  • ribbon
  • optional:  tags or stickers for the “to: / from:” information

Instructions:

If you are making your own background paper, which is really fun, follow these steps.  If you are using ready made patterned paper, skip to step 5.

1. Starting with one of your stamps, start randomly stamping the paper using first and second generation images.  A second generation image is made by stamping a second time without inking the stamp again.  As you can see in the example, you will get a lighter image the second time and this adds a little depth to your paper.

2. Continue stamping with your first stamp and first color until you have somewhat filled in your page.  Don’t forget to stamp off the edges of the paper so that the edges have some color and pattern, too.

3. Select another ink and another stamp and repeat.
4. Continue with a third ink and stamp, if desired.
5. Cut the paper into eight pieces:  3” x 6” each.  Fold the paper to 3”x 3” and punch a half a hole in the fold.
5. Insert the sucker into the hole.

Staple the sides (I used red staples from Target, available in the office/school supplies section)

Punch a hole in the top for the ribbon.

6.If desired, add a tag on the ribbon or sticker on the front for the “to” and “from” information.

Depending on the ages of your children, there are many phases of this project that they can successfully participate in.  They may be old enough for the paper trimmer and stamping or perhaps the "excitement" of the stapler would liven up your preschooler's day.  Little ones can even help put the suckers in the holes.

Have fun and Happy Valentine's Day from our family to yours!
