The soft beautiul look of hand-tinted photos can be achieved with some simple steps in PhotoShop Elements 2.
I chose a black and white wedding portrait of my beautiful mother-in-law. The dress was a soft peach, her hair was titian, and her eyes blue. I wanted to colorize this portrait to reflect those colors.
First, open your picture in PSE2.
From the top horizontal tool bar choose Image-Duplicate Image and click on OK.
Close the original picture; never work on the original.
Leave the duplicated image untouched and create a duplicate layer. Do this by opening your layers palette (see the tabs at the upper right hand side of the screen) and right clicking on the picture layer, then choose duplicate layer. You can keep your layers palette open and available to access by grabbing the palette by the blue bar with your mouse and dragging it into the gray work area.
Working on this duplicated layer, choose your selection brush, soft edged, about 200 pixels in size. Select the general area you want to colorize. Then go back with smaller and smaller brushes, refining your selected area. If you go too far the wrong way, you can Select—Inverse(from the top horizontal tool bar) to “push it back” where you need the selection line to be placed.
You may also need to zoom in to refine your selection, which may be accomplished by choosing View—Zoom In (or Out)(from the top horizontal tool bar).
Now invert your selection—Select—Inverse. The next step is to colorize the selection.
From the top horizontal tool bar choose Enhance—Adjust Color—Hue and Saturation. In the box that appears, making sure that the colorize box is chosen. Slide the hue slider to the color you would like the selection to be changed to, and then play with the lightness and saturation sliders to refine the color.
If you are colorizing more than one area of your photo, follow the same process until you achieve the finished product you desire.
