Colour Photos are always wonderful, but sometimes it can be desirable to create wonderful effects by changing your photo to black and white, or tinting and hightlight certain areas.
Tinting photos in PSP 9 is very easy and can be accomplished in a number of ways. With the tools and effects the program has available, there are only a few steps needed.
This tutorial assumes a basic working knowledge of PSP9.
An easy way to accomplish tinting of a photo is to tint the entire thing one colour. We can use layers to accomplish this, or we can use the Effect Colorize to accomplish this.
To use Layers, we first open a chosen photo and crop/adjust it as desired. You may or may not want to change it to Grey Scale now.
Add a New Raster Layer over the top of this one. Flood Fill this new Rastor layer with the colour you would like to tint your photo. On the Layers Palette, change the Blend Mode to Overlay. This will tint your photo your chosen colour.
Another way to accomplish this tinting in PSP9 is to use the Adjustment Colorize. Again you may want to change the original image to Grey Scale before using Colorize but it is not required.
Under Adjust/Hue and Saturation there is the Colorize effect. Choose the Hue and adjust the Saturation until the preview is appropriate, and OK it.
The Colorize effect was used to tint this photo blue.
This is a wonderful effect for adjusting the photo to Sepia, as you can add or subtract as much “yellowing” as you wish.
Photos can also be “tinted” using the original colour by masking the original photo with a Grey Scale Version, and “erasing” the Grey areas to show the colour underneath.
Start with 2 copies of the same image. Copy the original and paste as a new image.
Change the second Image to Grey scale.
Copy and Paste this Grey Scale image onto the Original Colour Image.
Using the Lasso Tool, with a slight Feather (5-7), outline the item that you would like to have remain the original colour, and delete. This allows the original colour to show through on the Grey Scale image
Continue this until all of the areas you would like highlighted are “erased”. Merge the layers and save.
The background on this adorable photo was cluttered and busy, and looks far better in black and white. However, this outfit picks up Taylor’s eyes so nicely, I did not want to lose this wonderful aspect of the photo. Highlighting the outfit and her eyes makes that even more evident.
Sometimes we would like to highlight areas of our photo but in more pleasing colours, or more subdued tones.
This can be easily accomplished! Starting with a photo that has been cropped and adjusted, change to GreyScale.
Once you have decided what you would like to tint, use the Lasso Tool with a slight feather to outline the item.
This clothing was chosen to be highlighted. After outlining, use the Colorize Effect to choose the colour, and make the saturation as low as you want for more subdued tones.
Continue outlining and Colorize each until the photo is complete and balanced.
Try to chose colours that complement each other.
This is an overview of the easiest ways to tint photos in PSP9. These can also be used in other versions of PSP. Experimentation will perfect your technique!
