Fun but Easy Father's Day Projects
By Holly Blackwell
Jun 15, 2005, 09:10

Father’s Day is all about the Dads in our lives, right? But most of us end up with many Dads to celebrate on this holiday – our own fathers, grandpas, fathers-in-law, the dads to our children, our sons who have become daddies themselves, or even a father figure. Below are three projects that will help make this holiday even more special for all the Dads you are honoring this year. They all share a similar style and use some common supplies so that they are easy to create at once. Enjoy!

Fishing Card

SUPPLIES:

Ivory card or cardstock (and envelope)

Acrylic paint & brushes

Jute

Fishing stickers (Karen Forster Design)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Begin with a basic ivory card (pre-purchased or made from ivory cardstock)
  2. Dry brush several colors of paint onto the front of the card. I used a darker blue and lighter blue (which is simply the darker shade mixed with white), gray (black & white paint mixed), and white.
  3. Allow to dry (this does not take as long when dry brushing).
  4. Cut a few pieces of jute. Knot the ends and lay them on the card while placing a sticker over them to hold in place.
  5. Cut another piece of jute that is the same height as the card. Place smaller stickers over it to hold I place.

Father’s Day Card

SUPPLIES:

Ivory card or cardstock (and envelope)

Acrylic paint & brushes

Jute

Tag sticker (Deluxe Designs)

sandpaper

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Begin with a basic ivory card (pre-purchased or made from ivory cardstock).
  2. Dry brush several colors of paint onto the front of the card. I used a darker blue as the main color, and highlighted with white around the edges, then a touch of a reddish-brown. I chose this color based on the border of the sticker tag. I did not have a perfectly matched paint so I mixed some basic colors together to create it.
  3. Allow to dry (this does not take as long when dry brushing), then sand the edges for an even more worn look.
  4. Tie several pieces of jute through the hole of the sticker tag.
  5. Place sticker on front of card.
  6. Run sandpaper over the front of the tag (gently).

Father’s Day Tag Mini Album

Using one sticker as a guide, this tag-shaped mini album makes the perfect card/gift combo for Father’s Day. It only takes a few minutes to complete and it’s a great way to use some of your scraps!

BASIC SUPPLIES:

Large tag sticker – “Father Tag Alongs”, Deluxe Designs

Ivory cardstock (I used scraps!)

Some ribbon, string or fibers

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Mat the large tag on ivory cardstock and trim.
  2. Using this as the pattern for your mini album, cut three more tag shaped pages from ivory cardstock.
  3. Punch a hole at the end of each tag.
  4. Using the sticker as a guide for a color scheme, decorate each page with various photos, journaling & accents. Below are notes on how I decorated my album.
  5. After finishing, tie the tags together at the end. This booklet should fit nicely instead a standard letter-sized envelope or you can create your own from scratch.

NOTES:

For my album, I opted to go with an intentionally messy (very messy!) look. I began by covering the pages/tags with acrylic paint. I used various colors (which I chose based on the sticker used on the cover). I mainly dry brushed for a really messy look. Keep in mind, when using acrylic paints that if you don’t own the exact color you want, you can use some basics to mix a color that matches what you need. I find this to be the most fun part!

I printed several pictures in small sizes, appropriate for the album. I slightly sanded the edges of each one and attached them to the tag pages after the paint was dry.

Using “royal blue” ink by Rubber Stampede and “Printer’s Type” alphabet stamps by Hero Arts, I added words and phrases near each photo. I hand wrote a greeting on the back.

Then I simply added all the fun “extras” including things such as: tag sticker, ribbon, spiral clip, mesh, buttons, colored staples, and fibers. Decorate as simply or as crazy as you’d like!!

For an extra worn look, I also chose to sand most parts of this album, including the background, stickers, edges, and photos.
