"How to Host Your First Scrapbook Party"

By: Brandie Valenzuela

A party? A Crop? A get-together? Regardless of what you call it, spending time with your scrapbooking friends is one of the best ways to spend your time. You may get a lot of pages completed, or you may chat and snack the night away, but no matter what, you will have fun!

If you have never hosted a scrapbook party, now is the time! Don't wait for your friends to do it. Take the initiative and before you know it, you may start a new trend in your area.

PLAN THE DATE: Choose a date that is at least a month in advance. Decide the time your party will start. Some scrappers enjoy all day crops, while others prefer a time that will start in the evening after dinner. Give some thought to what will work best for your guests.

YOUR GUEST LIST: Write up your guest list. Be sure to invite both experienced scrappers and those who might be interested, but have started scrapbooking yet. It is also important to give some thought to the number of scrappers you can comfortably host in your home.

THE INVITATIONS: You have many options when it comes to invitations. Some groups of scrappers don't need invites -- they simply give a call to their buddies and the party is set. The choice is ultimately yours, however, I recommend creating a simple invitation on a piece of colored 8 1/2" by 11" paper, with all the details. Each invitation should state the date, time, place, and other details (which I will mention in a minute). Fold each invite into thirds and mailed it off to your guests.

THE FUN DETAILS: If this is the first time you have organized an event such as this, I recommend planning a few fun extras.

  • Food: Food is a major part of most scrapbook parties or crops. Make it easy on yourself! Ask each guest to bring their favorite snack to share with everyone. I think it works best if the hostess provides the drinks, as well as the plates, napkins, and utensils.

  • A gift exchange: Ask each guest to bring a wrapped scrapbooking gift, valued between $5-$10. After everyone arrives at the party, sit in a circle and do a white elephant-type gift exchange with all the goodies!

  • Prizes: Decide in advance is you would like to give away a few prizes at your party. If so, be sure to note it on the invitations, as this can bring more guests to your party. Ideas for prize giving can be for the person who completes the most pages, the person with the messiest work area, the person who talked the most, and so on. The prizes don't need to be expensive -- a pen, eyelets, stickers, or diecuts work great.

I do have to add that I have found that as you hold more scrapbook parties, your guests will probably enjoy more simple get-togethers where there are no games or activities other than snacking and scrapping. Think about what works best for your scrapbook friends and ask them for their opinion.

PREPARING YOUR HOME: As you do with any party you host, you will want your home to be clean and inviting. You will want to have enough room for each scrapper. Most parties involve the use of a dining room table, with about 4-6 scrappers at it. Utilize the center of your living room or family room by placing a banquet table in the center for more of your guests. Give some thought to where you would like food and drinks placed.

THE PARTY: As each guest arrives, encourage them to choose where they would like to sit, scrapbook, and have fun! Be sure to take this time to enjoy yourself too -- don't rush around feeling frantic. These are your friends. Enjoy their company, because even if you don't complete dozens of scrapbook pages, the time will still be well spent!

Well, there you have it - if you have friends who scrap, get them together and have a scrapbooking party! What scrapper wouldn't love a night full of acid-free paper, photos and gossip? I know I do!
