Scrapbooking with Paper Clips

By Brandie Valenzuela

Take a visit to the stationary aisle of just about any store and one of the least expensive items you will find will be paper clips. At first, they may seem rather ordinary, but to scrapper's these little gizmos are extremely versatile, with endless possibilities.

Scrapbook companies aren't in the dark either -- most scrapbook stores sell paper clips, or 'shaped clips' as they are often called, in a variety of shapes, such as spirals, hearts, and squares. If you are looking for even more paper clipping options, home decor shops such as Pier 1 Imports sell clips with unique shapes such as the Eiffel Tower or animals such as an elephant.

Ready for some ideas? I have put together a list of some great ways you can use paper clips.

1. Use clips to attach fibers to the top of a photo or other item to create a hanging look.

2. Rather than hanging from a brad, hang a photo from a paper clip.

3. Some shaped clips, such as this heart, are beautiful when simply tied on with fiber or ribbon.

4. Clips are perfect for attaching quotes -- particularly those printed on vellum.

5. Clips work especially great when used in this file folder style layout. The journaling is on the file folder, leaving enough room to clip a photo or extra note.

6. Creating a border for your layout is easy with the use of clips. One version is to attach fiber to opposite sides of the clip and secure the fiber to your layout.

7. A second border idea is to secure your fiber to two clips, with each one attached to opposite side of the layout.

8. Another border is created with four strands of embroidery floss, which is bunched together in the middle of the layout with a clip.

9. Looking for a simple accent for your page? Create accent squares by adhering three sizes of squares (each 1/4" of an inch smaller than the one below it), and then attaching a clip.

10. Use clips to secure a folded side of a photo or journaling mat.

11. Photos that are left slightly askew on a layout look great when you add a paper clip to them.

12. Create visual interest on your layout by folding down a corner to reveal a coordinating color. Secure the folded corner with a clip.

13. Many times the addition of a paper clip in a random area, such as on this tag, can give an item some extra pizzazz.

14. Paper clips can be used to attach just about anything to a layout, such as tags and charms.

15. Clips can be used to create unique photo corners.

So there you have it -- just a few of the ways you can use paper clips in scrapbooking. Just about all of these ideas can be used with a clip different than the one shown. Feel free to scraplift (copy) these examples for your own pages, or use them as inspiration for your own clipping ideas!
