Faux Slide Mount Tutorial

By Brandie Valenzuela

Slide mounts are one of the hottest trends in scrapbooking these days. They are extremely versatile -- they can be used in many different ways and every scrappers has their own way of embellishing them. I am fortunate enough to have a photography shop just down the road from me that sells slide mounts very inexpensively. Many scrapbook stores are also carrying slide mounts as part of their inventory. However, if you don't have access to a store with them, or perhaps you are more of a do-it-yourself type scrapper, come along with me as I show how you can make your own imitation slide mounts!

The "Love" tag picture just above was create with a faux slide mount, which was created with folded cardstock. To create your own folded cardstock slide mount, take a sheet of cardstock in the color of your choice and trim a piece that is 6" x 2". With a pencil, draw two lines which will evenly divide the strip into three squares of 2" x 2". The lines will now serve as folding points.

Fold the strip on the lines (with the lines being on the inside). After folding, you should have a 2" x 2" square. Unfold the strip. Place adhesive on the left and right squares, the side that you made your pencil lines on. It is important that you use an adhesive that will cover these two squares completely. I use my Herafix Dots, but other options are a glue stick or pen, Memory Mount glue (apply a thin coat), or you may wish to run the strip through your Xyron. Once adhesive is applied to the squares, carefully fold up the strip once again -- fold the left side onto the center, and then fold the right side onto the center. This is now the bottom of the slide mount. Press the layers firmly together and allow the adhesive to dry (if necessary).

With the bottom of the slide mount still up, you will now trace the measurements that will create the window. With a ruler, measure from the left side of the slide mount and draw a line from top to bottom at 3/8" from the left side. Now measure from the right side of the slide mount and draw a line from top to bottom at 3/8" from the right side.

Turn slide mount 1/4 of a turn. Measuring from the left side of the slide mount, draw a line from top to bottom at 5/8" from the left side. Now measure from the right side of the slide mount and draw a line from top to bottom at 5/8" from the right side.

When you have completed the measurements, you will see that a rectangle has formed in the middle of the mount. Using sharp scissors or a craft knife, cut out the center rectangle of the mount.

After you have completed the creation of your window, you are now ready for the last step. To get a realistic slide mount look, each corner of the slide mount needed to be rounded. Corner rounders are usually an excellent way for rounding your corners, however, most of them can't punch through three layers of cardstock. My method is to take my corner rounder and press as hard as I can so that that it creates a rounded indention on each corner. I then use my scissors to cut where the indention is.

There you have it -- you have now created a faux slide mount! The slide mount can now be used as it as a frame or accent or you can take your creation even further by embellishing it.
